SEE EVENT DETAILS
Ryann Donnelly discusses her new book Justify My Love: Sex, Subversion and Music Video.

About Justify My Love

Justify My Love is about the magical and mysterious intensity of musical performance—how it can change lives, and how it can challenge conceptions of gender, sexuality, andrace. Featuring an intensely personal narrative of Donnelly’s own journey in the musicworld—from small dive bar gigs with bandmates who were also lovers, to shaking handswith Jay-Z as she signs her first record deal—Justify My Love is a raw account of thesoaring heights and heartbreaking lows when art, love, and sex collide.Written partly in the hotel Royal Monceau in Paris where Madonna filmed the iconic video for ‘Justify My Love’, Donnelly weaves her personal story with a fascinating history of the music video and how it has allowed musical performance to reach a mass audience and become a force for social change. The book features detailed analysis of seminal and controversial music videos by artists such as Madonna, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Mykki Blanco, Peaches, The Gossip, Frank Ocean, Zebra Kats, Cakes da Killa, and Paramore.
