In his feature debut, music video director and photographer David LaChapelle documents "Clowning," a groundbreaking dance phenomenon invented by Tommy Johnson as a response to the 1992 Rodney King riots in South Central Los Angeles. Mixing African tribal rituals and mind-blowing moves at impossible speeds, Clowning—and its offshoot movement, Krumping—offers kids an alternative to gangs, hustling and bling-bling hip hop culture. For the dancers, who form their own troupes, paint their faces like warriors, and meet with rival gangs to compete in contests or hone their skills, Clowning and Krumping become a way of life and a vital part of who they are.
