About Our Storyteller, Will Brokaw
I was born into a 3-generation avocado & citrus growing/propagating family in the late 60s. In 1993, I personally started direct-marketing our families’ avocados & citrus in the Bay Area and have been in charge of Farmers’ Market and direct restaurant sales ever since.
Participating in the family business was of little interest to me as a boy and young adult, but having run into a wall in my “chosen” career, I’d decided that participating at Certified Farmers’ Markets looked like a lot of fun; lo and behold, it became my life’s work.
Farmers’ Market proceeds waned over the first part of the millennium, possibly due to the over-saturation of markets and a slowly declining economy. This trend, however, was soon to be followed by a farm-to-fork revolution on the part of innovative and exciting restaurant establishments and by the dawn of avocado-on-toast. We have since transitioned our business to better serve these clients and we’re having so much fun!
I married my junior-college sweetheart, believe it or not, 2 years ago at age 48. In our spare time, Mirella and I love dining at client-restaurants in the city and cooking, watching movie rentals and chilling in airbnb rentals.
About Brokaw Nursery
The Brokaw Ranch Company specializes in intensively farmed avocado, specialty citrus, and subtropical tree-fruit production. The Brokaws endeavor to consistently produce plentiful crops of top-quality fruit while being good stewards of all resources: soil, water, and people. They try to avoid using synthetic chemicals for pest control but do use them when organic control methods are not effective. They also use a combination of synthetic and natural products for soil fertility. The Brokaw family earnestly pursues the introduction of new and superior avocado, citrus, and subtropical tree-fruit varieties for its patrons.
About Our Host, Homage
Homage, a unique financial district lunch destination, provides food reflecting and honoring local farms in the Bay Area. The large open-air space creates a welcoming atmosphere for morning coffee or a meeting place to conduct business matters. At night, the room can be converted into an intimate setting for after-work libations and multiple plates from the kitchen.
Weekly, our team travels to the farmers market, gathering what we decide is in perfect ripeness and prepare an ever-changing, concise menu. Our focus is on simplicity, freshness and technique. We expedite the demanding pace of a financial district lunch service by streamlining our menu. Simple, well-executed salads, an option of soup, fresh pasta and daily roasts are prepared that morning. Loaves of bread using freshly house-milled grain, are baked alongside the rotating, seasonal menu.
