About Our Storyteller - Steve Sullivan
Steve grew up in Los Gatos, California, and attended UC Berkeley in 1975, intending to major in rhetoric. He took a job as a busboy at Chez Panisse. While on a summer trip to Europe, he bought Elizabeth David's book, English Bread and Yeast Cookery, and began experimenting with baking. In 1979, when Chez's then-supplier could not keep up with demand, Steve became the retaurant's in-house breadmaker. He ended up leaving in 1983, with the restaurant's encouragment, to open his own bakery.
Along with his wife, Suzie, she and Steve founded The Acme Bread Company in 1983 to bake bread for restaurants and stores who wanted to offer better bread than was generally available on the wholesale market at the time. Today, Acme supplies bread to dozens of restaurants around the Bay Area including Chez Panisse, where Steven began baking bread in the seventies, as well as to scores of grocery stores and retail locations around the Bay Area.
