Real Food Real Stories - Connecting You to the People and Places Behind Our Food
------------------------------------------------------------------------

A special collaboration with Airbnb featuring live storytelling from some of the best Bay Area food makers and farmers. Plus, you’ll always find ingredients from the story in the shared meal.
On June 26th, join us for the fourth and final gathering of the year to bring community and the power of storytelling to Airbnb's beautiful HQ in SoMa*. We'll listen to Mary Jane Evans and Karen Salinger, co-owners of Veritable Vegetable, the nation's oldest distributor of organic produce. In an industry mostly run by men, the women of Veritable Vegetable have been responsible for spreading organic produce, grown by small farmers, throughout the Western US for over 40 years. While the food distribution industry runs largely behind the scenes, unbeknownst to most conusmers, the industry is the backbone of the 225 million meals eaten outside of US homes every day.

Join us for dinner and drinks sponsored by Airbnb and hear the co-owner's story behind increasing our country's access to organic produce through supporting organic farmers and contributing to an equitable food system.
*Upon arrival to the Airbnb office, please check in at the front desk on the left to receive your nametag for the gathering. An RFRS ambassador will be present to guide you into our dining space.

About Our Storytellers - Mary Jane Evans + Karen Salinger
Mary Jane Evans is CEO of Veritable Vegetable, the nation’s oldest distributor of organic fruits and vegetables. Originally trained as a musician, Mary Jane joined Veritable Vegetable in 1977. Drawn to the complexity of the food system, the desire to support organic farmers, and her ease in designing andimplementing systems, Mary Jane has worked in every part of the company. Though the business has grown from a small collective to a company of over 100 employees and annual revenue of over $45 million, Veritable Vegetable still utilizes principles of cooperation and participatory management in every decision. In her free time, Mary Jane plays the French Horn, sails her boat, and takes long rides on her bike.
Karen Salinger, a second-generation native to San Francisco, began her career in the produce industry in 1978. After three years at Veritable Vegetable, Karen took a ten-year leave to launch her own fresh salsa business, selling salsa in six western states. She returned to Veritable Vegetable in 1991 as Sales Manager and later as Co-Owner and Sales Director, positions that she still holds today.
