Revolutionizing Behavioral Healthcare: Caminar's Speakers Series

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Friday, April 23, 2021, 12 - 1:30pm Pacific time

On April 23, we will present a complimentary virtual panel discussion on Revolutionizing Behavioral Health: Using New Technology, Brain Science, and Equity-Oriented Treatment to Make Us All Better.

This event features Sandra R. Hernandez, MD, president and CEO of the California Health Care Foundation, Tom Insel, MD, former director of the National Institute for Mental Health, and Benjamin Miller, PsyD, chief strategy officer of Well-Being Trust, in conversation with Caminar's CEO, Mark Cloutier, MPP, MPH.

This series aspires to disrupt traditional thinking and deepen our collective knowledge, practices, and services to improve the well-being of the whole community; a conversation about new technologies and the importance of bringing an equity lens to behavioral healthcare is our starting point.

Behavioral healthcare is at a crossroads as a result of the pandemic. We have increased untreated mental health and substance use disorders that will persist even after we have arrived at herd immunity and people return to a new normal. This increased need exceeds delivery systems to provide the volume and care people need now.

At the same time, we see changes in the concepts guiding diagnosis, treatment, and service delivery. The integration of new technologies portends enormous opportunities for delivering more precise care at a lower cost, which will allow millions of people access to care.

This discussion will explore how to reconcile the issues of
-increased need/demand
-limited behavioral health workforce due to market conditions
-an inefficient delivery system
-a patchwork of finance and regulatory systems that countermand good care delivery
-issues of racial and economic equity, cultural differences in what behavioral health care is, and the persistence of stigma in seeking care with the emerging opportunities that technology and brain science may bring.
