at Menlo-Atherton Center for the Performing Arts (see times)
Performing for the first time in our new home theater, the Menlo-Atherton Performing Arts Center, Menlowe Ballet is thrilled to bring a world premiere by famed Russian choreographer Viktor Kabaniaev to the stage. Mr. Kabaniaev trained at the Vaganova School in St. Petersburg, Russia and has enjoyed a remarkable career as both a dancer and choreographer. He is the recipient of numerous awards recognizing his work as a choreographer, and received recent attention for his featured role in the 2011 award-winning documentary film, First Position. In the film, Kabaniaev coaches a young protege as she prepares for an elite ballet competition in New York City. For Menlowe Ballet he creates Sweet Sadness, set to the music of Jean Sibelius.
Two offerings by Artistic Director, Michael Lowe, complete the program. Chuntian resembles a Chinese watercolor painting come to life with streams, tadpoles, dueling crickets, and lotus flowers. Lowe’s Surfside, a rousing, audience favorite pays homage to instrumental vintage surf music and features live musical performances by musicians Paul Stinson of The Radishes and The Stripminers, and Jason Fessel of Lotus Rush.
