May is Mental Health Awareness Month! On Thursday May 4 from 6:00-7:00 PM, join San Mateo County Libraries for a free, virtual writing workshop geared toward practicing relaxation skills and finding a place of creativity and ease.
Local author, instructor and certified hypnotherapist Jenny Bitner will offer tools and techniques for soothing stress and tension. You will be invited to cultivate a quiet space within, away from any swarming to-do lists or self-criticisms that can make it difficult to attune to our thoughts and feelings, let alone write from them. Then, after a guided meditation, you will have a chance to write freely (a journal entry, a poem, whatever!) from a relaxed place.
Feel free to write in a notebook or on your computer. We hope to see you there!
Jenny Bitner's fiction and poetry have been published in Mississippi Review, The Fabulist, The Sun, Fence, Corium, Fourteen Hills, Mid-American Review, and PANK. Pine Press published a chapbook of her poetry entitled Mother. Her story "The Pamphleteer" was published in Best American Nonrequired Reading. She earned an M.F.A. in creative writing from the University of Virginia. She is also a certified hypnotherapist. Her novel Here Is A Game We Could Play from Acre Books is a bisexual love story with librarians and obsessive compulsive disorder. She teaches Trance writing classes combining hypnosis and writing and works with individuals on overcoming writing blocks. Hypnosis is one of the ways she has improved her own anxiety disorder.
