Weeds, those pests in your fields, become a valuable tool for testing your soil. Most fields have weeds. They are there day and night, rain or shine, experiencing the forces that shape plant growth. Learn to read weeds as dynamic and sensitive indicators of growing conditions in a field.
Join Ron Whitehurst, who has been studying weeds most of his life, in exploring what they tell about the soil. Ron has been building a database of indicator properties that can be used to tune into what is going on in the soil. We will walk around and identify weeds growing on the grounds and harvest some to sample for a salad and cooked greens. We will discuss the uses of weeds for food, medicine and play.
Now specific weed information is available in a database to enable everyone to make use of this skill. High-tech tools now give modern farmers, ranchers, and gardeners information that formerly took a lifetime to acquire. This is the basis for the reference section of Reading Weeds. This database will be distributed to attendees.
