Rainwater Harvesting

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Cost: $10 - but you'll get a $10 gift card for attending the workshopSponsored by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission
With a few months still to go in San Francisco's rainy season, learn how you can easily capture rainwater to use in your garden or home. In this class, you’ll learn what to consider and where to start for systems as simple as a single barrel under a downspout, or as complicated as an indoor plumbing system for toilet flushing. Keep precious rainwater out of the sewer and keep money in your pocket by harvesting the water that lands on your roof.
The workshop fee is $10, but you will get a $10 gift card to the Urban Farmer Store or Cole Hardware for attending!

INSTRUCTOR: Kat Sawyer
Kat has been a participant in the San Francisco Bay Area’s urban ecology movement for over 20 years. She is inspired by activities that bring people together to enliven their communities, and her work strengthens the connection between natural spaces and the urban environment. Kat has a decade of experience implementing community-driven greening projects in San Francisco. She is a seasoned project manager and licensed landscape contractor with expertise in rainwater catchment. Over the past 5 years, Kat has designed and installed 20 rainwater harvesting systems in schools and public spaces, engaging the greater community in the process. She has developed rainwater harvesting programs for the San Francisco Unified School District and the City of Oakland. In 2015, she founded a nonprofit called Tap the Sky, which grew from the SFUSD rainwater harvesting program. Tap the Sky’s mission is to encourage and facilitate rainwater catchment as a means to demonstrate green infrastructure and community resilience.

FAQs
What are my transportation/parking options?
Although there is street parking available, it can be challenging on weekends. Public transportation is frequent and nearby, so it's a great option! The 6, 36, 43, and 44, bus lines and the N Judah all run within a few blocks of the garden. Forest Hill Station is also nearby and you can take the 43 or 44 directly from there to the garden.
What should I bring to the workshop?
Classes are held outside in our teaching garden. We recommend bringing a hat and sunscreen, comfortable closed toed shoes, a full water bottle, and lots of layers. You may also want to bring a notebook to take notes on what you are learning and you are welcome to bring food and join us for a picnic lunch in the garden at noon.
Do you ever cancel workshops?
We try our best not to cancel, but if the weather forecast suggests it is very likely to be pouring rain, we will cancel the workshop and notify attendees by 5pm the day before. We do hold classes in drizzling weather, however, so come prepared with rain gear. We are also occasionally forced to cancel workshops due to other unforeseen circumstances. In any case, we will happily register you for another workshop or refund your workshop fee.
Happy gardening!
