Qseries: The Criminalization of Queer People

SEE EVENT DETAILS
at STRUT (see times)
Horizons’ Q Series are free public events featuring leaders of the LGBTQ movement in dialogue about our movement, our culture, and what it means to be LGBTQ. The Q Series offers excellent opportunities to learn about the work being done by Horizons’ grantee partners and to meet and connect with others.

These popular programs include high-level, strategic discussions about movement strategy, emerging issues affecting the LGBTQ community, how to give more effectively and strategically, and feature outstanding professionals and community leaders.

We invite you to join us for our next discussion on: The Criminalization of Queer People, moving from persecution to freedom for all.

Description: Queer people have had a detailed history of being criminalized by society. It wasn’t long ago when you could end up in jail because you happened to visit a gay bar or because the buttons on your sweater weren’t oriented to the traditional “feminine side”. Although we have seen many advancements, LGBTQ people still face discrimination in the legal and penal system. What can we do to reform the system and ensure equal treatment for all? Let’s take a look at who is being criminalized today and how do we rebuild queer lives affected by the criminal justice system?

Moderator: Matthew Coles, Professor of Practice at UC Hasting, Former Deputy National Legal Director at ACLU
Panelists:Janetta Johnson of TGI Justice, Jessica Nowlan, of Young Women’s Freedom CenterCaroline Roberts of Oasis Legal Services
