SEE EVENT DETAILS
Oakland, CA— The Prescott Circus Theatre, now in its 33rd year, will present their annual Student Showcase on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at Oakland Technical High School. As many as 100 talented Oakland youth will demonstrate their skills in two free shows at 11:00am and 1:30pm. The 3rd-8th grade students will perform juggling, stilting, acrobatics, unicycle, hambone body percussion, hip-hop dance, and balancing acts. Performances will feature students from PCT’s after school programs at Prescott, Esperanza, Lafayette,Manzanita SEED/Community, Parker, Korematsu Discovery Academy, Piedmont Avenue Elementary Schools and Westlake Middle School. For the third year, Prescott Circus students will again collaborate with the Oakland Spirit Orchestra (OSO). OSO is a youth orchestra featuring elementary and middle school students from five West Oakland public schools. Shows are free to the public, and all ages are welcome to attend. For more information, visit https://www.prescottcircus.org or email [email protected].
This year’s show is titled Ubuntu, a Nguni Bantu term and philosophy that can be summed up as “I am what I am because of who we all are.” (Desmond Tutu). It is a way of looking at the world that ”considers the success of the group above that of the individual.” (Stephen Lundin).
The show’s name emerged from a meeting between the directors of the respective programs and this year’s Showcase director, Tristan Cunningham. “Ubuntu Spirit is the name of a new song we perform in collaboration with Valerie Troutt, a critically acclaimed singer songwriter (Embodiment Project, MoonCandy),” shares Alison Streich of the Oakland Spirit Orchestra, “The song is about kindness - such an important value for us to practice and promote right now.”
“Circus arts performance embodies the spirit of Ubuntu, where we honor, celebrate, and rely on one another's strengths, talents, and unique gifts for our own participation something greater than ourselves,” David Hunt, Prescott Circus Theatre.
Valerie Troutt will be singing her original song, Ubuntu Spirit, with the Oakland Spirit Orchestra as part of this very special production.
