Music Accompaniment:

For sixty years, Harbin has been an evolving, emblematic intentional community, honoring the body and the spirit, with a reputation for hedonism and joy, dancing and meditation, vibrant creativity in writing and in graphic arts, and experiments in love and relationships. Set in the beautiful Coast range near Middletown, Lake County, it was destroyed in the Valley Fire. More accurately this was a firestorm so hot it ignited almost everything in its path, whimsically sparing a few homes. Several hundred were destroyed, several hundred people were left homeless, and the Harbin buildings were turned to ash.
We honor their legacy and their spirit, and want to help in the rebuilding however we can. The spirit of Harbin will rise from the ashes. Harbin has contributed vastly to our consciousness and even to our language, “polyagony” and “gunny-sacking.” For definitions, for a raffle, and for exciting performances, come to the reading, which features five poets, three of them current or recent Poet Laureates, and a surprise guest.

Elaine Watt lived at Harbin Hot Springs for fifteen years. Last September, she lost everything in the Lake County Valley Fire, including an entire bookcase of journals, saving only her laptop and four outfits. She continues to work for Harbin, as Accounting Manager, in the rebuilding effort.
She has been writing since she was fifteen. In 2012, she was selected as Poet Laureate of Lake County. She has studied with Ishmael Reed, Diane di Prima, and Clive Matson. She has released four chapbooks and finished a manuscript of poetry, My Tumbled Life. She is also nearly done with her seventh book, Flirting with Fire, about Harbin before and after the fire.

Joan Gelfand’s work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Poets & Writers, Vanity Fair and over 100 other literary journals. She holds an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Mills College and has published three poetry volumes and a novel. She was awarded the Cervena Barva Award for her short fiction collection “Here and Abroad.”
Joan is very active in the writing workd, has been a featured reader at book festivals and venues around the country, serves as Development Chair of the Women’s National Book Association, is a member of the National Book Critics Circle and a juror for the Northern California Book Awards. She lives in San Francisco with her husband, Adam Hertz and two beatnik kitties – Jack Kerouac and Lawrence Ferlinghetti. http://joangelfand.com

Julie Adams: As a visual artist with an education in fine art, her first poetry emerged during a sailing adventure across the Pacific from San Francisco to Singapore. She had only a small journal, so she started to write on the log book and the margins of paperback books and French nautical charts until her sailing partner made her get a larger journal. She wrote all night long on deck alone, surrounded by the empty blue bowl of sea and sky. “Nightwatch” was her first poem and that was ten years ago. Just recently she was chosen as Poet Laureate of Lake County. She is also the designer and director of Harbin Hot Springs, newly emerging from the devastating fire.

Casey Carney, originally from Southern California, is a poet, dancer, choreographer, and photographer. She summarizes her artistic endeavors as “an interest in movement.” A former special education teacher, Casey lives in Lake County, where she served as poet laureate from 2014-2016.

Sam Flot has been performing poetry with improvised music in Northern California and beyond since 2002. He is a "Now Age poet of the Stokin' Word," reading with his bands "Gazelles" and "The Echo Location." Sam rhythmically reads his poetry, improvising between the page to the mic. rock and roll style.
Sam is a founding member of "Gazelles," an improvisational music group. He works with singer/songwriter/looper Garrin Benfield on acoustic and they loop along with the third member, Austin’s epic multi-instrumentalist E.P.O.K, on bass, synth and laptop. Sam has also played in many other bands, including Sidewalk Astronomy, and has sat in with many friends such as Five Eyed Hand, Izabella, and Geo Trio. Sam’s current musical project is called "Edgewise."
