Play with Konrad Black, Maayan Nidam, Jeno, and William Wardlaw

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Come PLAY with us the First Saturday of the month at our new monthly featuring world class artists at the legendary EndUp!

PLAY is a party series best described as recess for adults. It's all the fun you aren't supposed to be having because you're supposedly a grown up now. With all the kids you shouldn't hang out with, but they're too much fun not to. And all the music that makes you glad you’ve grown up – just a little. The bells have rung. It's time to PLAY.

ARTISTS

KONRAD BLACK

Time has accelerated ten-fold for Konrad over years since the dark, shadowy tones of "Draconia" & "Medusa Smile" enveloped dancefloors around the Globe, christening his influential Wagon Repair label in style as well as establishing him as a highly innovative producer and much sought after remixer (just check out his work for Tiga, Snax, Audion and Martini Brös if further proof is required). Konrad knows it’s about living and breathing the music; it’s about getting to know the people, understanding what makes the club tick and always delivering a night of memorable tracks and seamless transgressions. He quickly found himself holding down one of the much coveted residencies at the Legendary Panorama Bar as well as regular spots at dance music’s epicenters; Fabric in London, Rex in Paris, Tenax in Florence, Privilege in Ibiza to name a few…After stints in Berlin and Los Angeles, his next stop was Vancouver, where his laid back way of life was the perfect environment to patiently prepare for the whirlwind his life has now become. Free from the restraining influences of established scenes and trends, Konrad was able to develop his own individual take on dance music under the guidance of Patti Schmidt’s Brave New Waves late night radio show. Digging through the junk bins in Vancouver’s coolest record stores - Basics & Odyssey Imports - also unearthed hidden gems from artists like Tikiman and Maurizio, along with early Klang and Perlon releases that had been shamefully overlooked by the uninitiated. There’s certainly a Byronesque quality to Black, a perpetual struggle between external light and inner darkness that unearths moments of beauty in the darkest corners of our collective consciousness.

MAAYAN NIDAM

Maayan Nidam is the kind of artist that will switch up on you and charge off in a whole new direction, whose music has always orbited house and techno. From her roots in Tel Aviv to settling in Berlin, Maayan quickly forged a musical path for herself through a rich spread of projects and releases, most notably rising to prominence under the Miss Fitz moniker at a time when minimal techno was yielding its most creative and inspiring output. Likewise the Laverne Radix alias and collaborative projects such as Mara Trax (alongside Vera Heindel) spoke of a mind brimming with ideas to unleash. It was in 2009 that Maayan first emerged under her own name, delivering an ambitious project that saw her broaden her horizons away from the dancefloor. Night Long was an album that saw her work with a rich library of recordings from Cuban folk musicians, naturally joining the dots between modern dance music and the passionate, melodic sway of Latin American traditions. Of course though, dance music is where Maayan’s musical trajectory has stemmed from, and her love of undulating grooves is ever quenched by her work as a DJ. With selections that span the ages without fear of switching up the vibe, she may be as wilfully esoteric on the decks as in the studio but she always strikes the balance to keep from veering into self-indulgence. That is, after all, the test of any great artist, to entertain and challenge in equal measure, and Maayan Nidam has that approach locked down.

JENO

Fueled by an enigmatic nature, DJ Jenö has remained one of San Francisco’s most beloved and sought after DJs for over two decades. Developing a passionate love for music from an early age he spent several years as a punk musician & songwriter, before discovering djing and falling into the vibrant London warehouse party scene of the mid 80s. Once Acid House fever hit the UK, Jenö never looked back, becoming known for his heady Whoosh parties, and his involvement in the early days of the notorious Tonka Sound System.

WILLIAM WARDLAW

William is a Bay Area DJ who has worked with As You Like It since 2010. He maintained a residency ExYo at Wish in San Francisco and at Zughaus Gallery in Berkeley. His inviting take on dance music explores deeper, melodic sounds with an appreciation for unpredictable rhythms and plenty of bass. He has played for many favorite local crews beyond AYLI, including Direct to Earth, Housepitality, The Boombox Affair, Forward, Werd, Qoöl, Bubble, SET, and Sound Department. Some of William's highlights include warming up for Max Cooper, Henry Saiz, Matthew Dekay & Silicone Soul, Sishi Rösch, and Tiger & Woods. William's exposure to world-class dance music started while studying abroad in London and attending events at Fabric nearly every weekend. Getting lost in that all-encompassing environment put the sounds into context. Kontrol parties, Sunset Sundays, and unlicensed undergrounds are key influences. William's respect for the local scene pushes him to discover new music and share the unique sounds he loves.
