Pi Day at Exploratorium

Welcome to our annual Pi Day! Help us celebrate this never-ending number (3.14159 . . .) and Einstein's birthday as well.

Founded at the Exploratorium by our own Prince of Pi, physicist Larry Shaw, Pi Day has become an international holiday, celebrated live and online all around the world.

With Mission Delirium

Grab a pi digit and get in line for the annual Pi Procession! A high-spirited crowd parades through the museum and circles the Pi Shrine 3.14 times, waving the digits of pi and dancing along to San Francisco brass band Mission Delirium. All participants will enjoy a free slice of pie following the parade.

Mission Delirium is a 12-piece brass and percussion band composed of the most enthusiastic musicians whose mission is to put a groove in your step.

With Seaglass Restaurant

A sweet treat awaits celebrants at the end of the Pi Procession. Grab a slice of pie and enjoy live music by brass band Mission Delirium while you eat.

With Lori Lambertson

Celebrate a multi-layered Pi Day with Exploratorium's resident math enthusiast Lori Lambertson.

In recognition of Pi Day, Women's History Month, and our spring experience Look Up, Lori will talk about women scientists whose work advanced our understanding of outer space. Come learn about their research and expertise, and how these scientists incorporate pi in their work.

Lori Lambertson studied dance and biology at UC Santa Cruz, painting at USF, and education at SFSU. She taught both math and science at the middle school level, before working as teacher-in-residence in the Exploratorium's Teacher Institute (TI).

Why pi? This famous mathematical constant has been a curiosity across cultures for thousands of years, and even inspired Exploratorium staff Larry Shaw to commemorate its own special day. Join us to celebrate pi with art, science, history, and our homegrown traditions.

Ron Hipschman joined the Exploratorium in 1971. He has worked as an exhibit developer, author, teacher, and webcast host, and has helped launch the Exploratorium's Environmental Initiative.

There's more than one way to slice it! Learn how to calculate pi with a variety of hands-on demos.
