Phutura with Egyptian Lover, DJ Babu, and Double Peas

at Public Works (4pm - 2am)
EGYPTIAN LOVER:

The Egyptian Lover started out as a D.J. in Lafayette, Louisiana then moved to Los Angeles and started promoting dance events with Unique Dreams Entertainment, which would later change its name in 1983 to Uncle Jamm's Army. Together, they would hold early hip-hop dance parties at the L.A. Sports Arena and in Torrance with over 10,000 people. The Egyptian Lover's first recording was in 1983 as a member of the The Radio Crew, and then later that year he contributed to "Dial-A-Freak" which was released by Uncle Jamm's Army. The Egyptian Lover released his debut solo single and club hit "Egypt, Egypt" the following year, in 1984. This release was followed by more dance and local club hits, such as "And My Beat Goes Boom", "What Is a DJ If He Can't Scratch", "Egypt Egypt," and "Girls," "You're so Fine," "The Lover," "Sexy Style," "The Alesby Inn," and "Freak a Holic."

DJ BABU:

DJ Babu's career began in the early 1990s when he joined the Beat Junkies crew in 1993, a pivotal moment that launched his influential path. Babu coined the term "turntablist," setting his innovative scratching and vinyl manipulation apart from conventional DJing, and reshaping the art form for generations.

Babu's rise to fame accelerated with Dilated Peoples, a group he formed in 1997 with rappers Evidence and Rakaa Iriscience. Their debut single "Third Degree" dropped that year, followed by the widely praised album The Platform in 2000, cementing their status in Hip-Hop. His versatility shone through in 2002 when he collaborated with Linkin Park on "H! VItg3" for their Reanimation remix album, expanding his reach beyond traditional Hip-Hop audiences.

Beyond Dilated Peoples, Babu's work with the Beat Junkies, alongside Melo D, DJ Rhettmatic, and J-Rocc, and the Likwit Junkies with rapper Defari kept him at the forefront of the scene. His production chops were showcased in projects like the 2005 album The L.J.'s and the Duck Season 3 compilation, blending talents from artists like Strong Arm Steady and Planet Asia. His 1996 breakbeat album Super Duck Breaks, released under the alias "The Turntablist," became a battle DJ essential, while his 1997 sweep of three International Turntable Federation titles, Beatjuggling, Scratching, and Team World Champion, solidified his technical mastery.

Since 2017, Babu has channeled his expertise into education as the Program Director and lead instructor at the Beat Junkie Institute of Sound, mentoring the next wave of DJs.
