Angela Merkel, the Rise of Populism in Europe and the Challenge of Mass Migration
Reflections by Dr. Christoph von Marschall
Interesting reflections about Angela Merkel and her political approach followed by a reception.
Time Magazine lauded the Federal Chancellor. In Germany, however, she provoked mixed feelings and some serious opposition in her party, the CDU/CSU. Can she regain control?
Christoph von Marschall is a diplomatic correspondent of the editorial office of the "Tagesspiegel" in Berlin. From 2005 to 2013 he was the US correspondent of the newspaper, and since the inauguration of Barack Obama in 2009 he is the only German newspaper correspondent in the White House press corps. Previously he was successful as an expert on Eastern Europe. After studying Eastern European History, Ancient History, Political Science and Geography in Freiburg, Mainz and Krakow he reported 1989/91 for the "Süddeutsche Zeitung" from Hungary about the mass exodus of East Germans to the West and the upheavals in Romania and Bulgaria. In 1991 he went to the "Tagesspiegel", where he worked first in policy editorial. Later, he was responsible for the reportage page "Three" followed by his work as department manager of the op-ed. He accompanied the integration of Central and Eastern European transition countries in the EU and NATO and interviewed almost all of their presidents. Besides working for the "Tagesspiegel" he is a guest at the ARD Press Club and commentator for Deutschlandfunk and WDR. Additionally he is writing for "Zeit Online", "Cicero", "Atlantic Times" and "Parliament". He is the Deputy Chairman of the Berlin Press Club e. V. and author of several books. Recently published in January 2016 was: "Was ist mit den Amis los? Über unser zwiespältiges Verhältnis zu den USA" (Herder Verlag) (What's wrong with the Americans? About our ambivalent relationship with the US) and in 2012 "Der neue Obama. Was von der zweiten Amtszeit zu erwarten ist" (Orell Füssli Verlag) (The new Obama. What can be expected by his second presidential term?).
