What is the state of Pakistan’s democracy? A country known for its strong military and weak political parties, Pakistan has successfully maintained democratically elected governments since 2008. While this may be an achievement in and of itself, democracy is still very weak. Corruption at all levels of the government continues to be a fact of daily life and the country’s military has been consistently destabilizing. Raza Rumi will discuss democracy and civil society in Pakistan, and the role of state institutions, especially the judiciary, in upholding democratic norms and rooting out corruption.
Mr Rumi is Director of the Department of Journalism at Ithaca College. As a journalist, he writes for The Daily Times where he provides extensive coverage on political and social issues in Pakistan. He is also the recent author of “Being Pakistani: Society, Culture, and the Arts”.
