For 25 years, the Pacific Rim Film Festival has taken us inside yurts, on the backs of camels, high on a snowy mountain peak, in the depths of a volcano - all while sitting comfortably in a theater seat. And all for free, with the exception of a special benefit event each year.
The 2013 festival, October 17-23, is presented by Ow Family Properties with support from UCSC, as well as with the patronage of many donors and sponsors.
Twenty films will be screened at four locations: the Rio Theatre, Del Mar Theatre and Riverfront Stadium Twin in Santa Cruz and Green Valley Cinema in Watsonville. The final benefit event is Wednesday,October 23, at the Rio Theatre.
This year's films originate from North Korea, Cambodia, Tibet, China, the Philippines, Thailand, New Zealand/Samoa, Japan, Taiwan, India and the United States; selected screenings include discussions with filmmakers.
The first Pacific Rim Film Festival, inspired by the Hawaii International Film Festival, took place at the Del Mar Theatre in 1988. Films chosen embody PRFF's theme, "When Strangers Meet," reflecting the valueof communication, understanding and compassion across the globe.
