Out of the Darkness Community Walk

SEE EVENT DETAILS
On Saturday, September 23, 2017 at Mission Creek Park in San Francisco, hundreds of Bay Area residents will participate in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's Out of the Darkness Community Walk. Registration begins at 9:00 am, and the walk begins at 10:00 am.

This year marks the 12th year of the San Francisco walk, which is one of six walks taking place across the Bay Area this Fall. Each walk provides support and healing for survivors of suicide loss and those with lived experience around suicide and mental illness.

AFSP's San Francisco Bay Area walks have grown substantially over the past few years, both in attendance and funds raised, with almost 5,000 attendees and $450,000 locally in 2016. The walks are critical in funding the local chapter's activities, which include professional and public education events and initiatives; continued support of educational programs like More Than Sad, the Interactive Screening Program, and Talk Saves Lives; suicide prevention outreach efforts; as well as advocacy at the state level.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is the leading organization in the fight against suicide, with a goal of reducing the annual suicide rate by 20% by the year 2025. The Greater San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of AFSP works towards this goal in the Bay Area through its programming and events that promote suicide prevention, provide outreach to at-risk populations, and support survivors of suicide and suicide loss.

Community sponsors of these events include BlackThorn Therapeutics as a presenting sponsor, along with United Healthcare, Three Fish Studios, BiRite, and many other Bay Area organizations that are showing their support for this national health issue in our communities.
