Melodie Mousset's exhibition in San Francisco presents two works: HanaHana and Sing a Jellyfish.
HanaHana (??) is a VR playground unlike any other: Immersed in an otherworldly desert and haunting soundscape, the players experience a call to adventure and creativity, using their life force to seed the landscape with giant hands, which bloom and unfurl like flowers. He or she can cultivate this bizarre wilderness and create the most unexpected hallucinatory constructions limited only by one's imagination. More than 1 million hands have been created by 200,000 players in more than 60 exhibitions across the world.
HanaHana ?? is an award-winning persistent sandbox in which all individual creations participate into a larger collective metaverse. For this exhibition, we will present the multi-player version of the work, Multi-bloom. From the Japanese : 'blooming, flower' - HanaHana was inspired by the manga One Piece, in which the character Nico Robin has the power to infinitely reproduce her own body parts on any surface after consuming the magic HanaHana Nomi fruit (also called the devil fruit). VR technology, like a devil fruit, grants players magic powers to multiply and extend thousands of arms into endless, dizzying architectural structures. Immersed in the otherworldly landscape, players can unleash their creativity and take part in a unique collaborative art-piece, where virtual reality merges with the subconscious for a thrilling journey into the depths of their mind, body, and senses.
We also present an iteration of Sing a Jellyfish -- dive into the deep water of your consciousness in a mesmerizing soundscape with the interactive virtual reality experience, Sing a Jellyfish. In a dream-like state underwater, a ghostly submarine life appears and soon you realize, that the glowing jellyfish invites you to sing with them, in fact, to sing through them. They are controlled and animated with the pitch, vibration and intensity of your own voice, reflecting a surreal choir of yourself. The art-experience aims to provoke a state of self-hypnosis by visualizing the voice through immersive technology, creating a connection between vibrations over time and space. In Melodie's whimsical and absurd composition or decomposition pieces, the body becomes a site for physical and spiritual exchanges with technology. Chris Kraus, renown writer and award-winning author of the best seller "I Love Dick", writes about Mousset's work in the March 2019 issue of ArtReview: "I don't think of Mousset as part of a lineage, unless it's one of exceptionally original, anomalous artists who have the courage to pursue an idea as far as it will go.
