Onstage Repertory Theatre Company peeks into “The Fitting Room,” a voyeuristic perspective on the search for meaning, truth and the perfect pair of jeans opening June 14 and running through June 30 at the Martinez Campbell Theater. Directed by Helen Means and co-directed by playwright Kathryn G. McCarty, it is a swift moving comedy incorporating a cast of 14, with each actor performing multiple roles.
The show was named as one of the “Top 10 of Bay Area Theater, 1998," by Pat Craig, then critic for the Contra Costa Times. Means and McCarty have worked together since the two met when producing two original plays by screenwriter Craig Brewer (“Black Snake Moan,” “Hustle and Flow,” and “Footloose”2011 remake).
“Working with new writers has always been important to Onstage Theatre’s mission,” said Means who co-starred in the Off-Broadway production of McCarty’s “The Ladies Quintet” in 2015.
“Performing in Manhattan was the thrill of a lifetime. Kathy and I have enjoyed a wonderful 30 years as artists, co-workers and friends,” said Means, who founded Onstage 41 years ago. McCarty has written over 20 plays and musicals, including “RIVETS,” a musical about Rosie the Riveter and the shipyard workers of the Richmond Shipyard.
Onstage Repertory Theater Company’s lease has recently been extended for another year at the Campbell Martinez Theatre. The company will soon announce plans for the upcoming season as well as further improvements at the theater. Martinez Theater General Manager Mark Hinds is proud of the positive effect the theatre has had on the community and encourages patrons to visit local restaurants near the theatre.
The play also stars Linda Sciacqua (San Ramon); Rhonda Bowen (Napa); Jennifer Lynn Brown Peabody (Pittsburg); Erin McMann and Evelyn Owens (Concord); Sarah Piane (Hercules); Allison Means (Alamo); Sheilah Morrison, Hayley Kennen and Rita Hamlin (Pleasant Hill), Barry Hanau (Lafayette); Jeffery Kimmich (Oakland); Austin Maisler and Craig Anderson (Martinez).
