As penned by Paul Schrader, a New Orleans developer (Cliff Robertson) slips into emotional oblivion after the rescue of his kidnapped wife (Genevieve Bujold) and daughter is botched. Years later, he returns to the Florence cathedral where he first met his wife, only to encounter her absolute likeness (also played by Bujold). Cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond sets this psychological space spinning with vast pans, mimicking an obsessive return to earlier trauma.
