Nature in the City Walk - Tigers on Market Street

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Join Nature in the City in the heart of downtown San Francisco to learn how the Western Tiger Swallowtail butterfly (Papilio rutulus) has found a home on San Francisco’s Market Street. The butterfly lives a complete life cycle in the London Plane trees that line the busy thoroughfare, and the canyon of tall buildings lined with trees resembles the butterfly’s natural habitat – a river canyon. Nature in the City is working to create habitat islands on Market Street that provide nectar sources and larval food trees for the butterflies.
Walk Leaders: Amber Hasselbring & Kirstin Weeks
Nature in the City Executive Director Amber Hasselbring has been working on the concept for Tigers on Market Street with fellow lepidopterist Liam O'Brien since 2013, when the City began discussions about how to redesign Market Street.
Nature in the City Board Member Kirstin Weeks is Senior Specialist in Energy and Building Ecology at Arup in San Francisco. Kirstin is looking toward the future for the Tigers on Market Street by inviting architecture, design and corporate colleagues to join in and create more butterfly habitat downtown.
Details:
This walk is timed to coincide with the peak fall flight of the butterflies, so hopefully we will see them in multiple locations.
The walk will commence at the E-Trade Plaza steps (enter off Market between Sansome and Battery). The group will gather for a lunchtime talk for 15 minutes.
At 12:15 Amber and Kirstin will lead the group on a 45 minute walk along Market Street to Embarcadero, then around to Sue Bierman Park where Western Tiger Swallowtails mate, also called a lek.
Preparation:
Bring a lunch if this walk overlaps with your lunch break. Layers are always important downtown.
Meeting Location:
Meet at the E-trade Plaza steps.
Transportation:
Public transportation (BART/MUNI) is incouraged to the site. The meeting site is a short walk from the Montgomery Street station.
Cost:
This partnership-building walk is FREE to Nature in the City members and the general public.
For those who wish, donations of any amount go to support continued outreach and education efforts by Nature in the City. You can bring cash on the day of the event or donate online.
Or join Nature in the City today and attend all of our walks in 2017 for free!
