Nature in the City Birding Walk - Mount Davidson

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Join the early birds on Mount Davidson, the tallest hill in San Francisco. Ornothologists have recorded nearly 200 species of birds on Mt. Davidson since the early 1990s, and around two dozen species of birds have been known to nest at the site. The habitat is a mixture of exotic forest and native coastal scrub and grassland, including a number of locally rare native plants.
Learn how management issues such as recreation and pets, as well as proposed habitat restoration efforts, will affect the hill's bird populations.
Dominik also has a keen eye for the fauna on the site, including meadow voles, garter snakes, and deer mice.
Walk Leader: Dominik Mosur
Dominik Mosur began birdwatching in San Francisco in 2001. Approximately 10 years ago he began leading bird tours around San Francisco for Golden Gate Audubon and other similar organizations. Dominik's main interest in the field of ornithology is to continually learn the status and distribution of birds in San Francisco and the Bay Area. He also gives private bird tours and lessons on how to improve field ornithology skills, and is the full-time animal keeper at the Randall Museum Animal Exhibit.
Details:
The walk includes an approximate 200 to 300 foot elevation gain. Unfortunately this walk will not be wheelchair accessible. Depending on the weather that day it could be warm but more likely fog and wind are expected for at least part of the walk.
Children 7+ are welcome to attend with a parent. Leashed dogs are welcome as they are at all city parks.
Preparation:
Comfortable shoes, preferably with some grip. Dress in layers and bring water and binoculars!
There are no restrooms on site.
Meeting Location:
Meet at the Dalewood Way entrance to the park (see map)
Transportation:
Parking in the neighborhood is fairly easy. The Muni 36 and 43 are within walking distance.
Cost:
This walk is FREE to Nature in the City members.
For others a suggested donation of $10-$20 goes to support continued outreach and education efforts by Nature in the City. You can bring cash on the day of the event or donate online.
