April 6 - 7: Sat. at 8pm, Sun. at 3pm
This year's season marks Nancy Karp + Dancers' first return to the Taube Atrium Theater since performing there in 1981. In honor of the occasion, the company will premiere 'Eppur si muove,' a new work responding to the Atrium's classical volumes and voids, while also drawing inspiration from Karp's studies of nature, particularly the circular patterns of migrating birds.
Karp chose the title for its resonance with circular motion throughout nature. The phrase "Eppur si muove" ("And yet it moves") is ascribed to the 17th-century scientist and heretic, Galileo Galilei, who after being forced to recant his claim that the Earth moves around the Sun, doubled down on the fact of the Earth's heliocentric orbit.
'Eppur si muove' is set to an expanded version of Samuel Adams' work for string quartet and percussion, titled 'Sundial.' Adams is a 2019 Guggenheim Fellow and former composer-in-residence with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
'Sundial' will be performed live by the Friction Quartet with guest percussionist Haruka Fujii. The Quartet's core members are violinists Otis Harriel and Kevin Rogers, violist Mitso Floor and cellist Doug Machiz. Now in their 12th year, Friction Quartet has demonstrated its commitment to new music, having commissioned 47 works for string quartet and premiered more than 100 works.
In the second half of the program, Nancy Karp + Dancers will reprise 'fly through the night, and land near dawn.' Praised for its "imaginative movement," and performed by "a powerhouse ensemble," (Critical Dance), 'fly through the night' features music by Berkeley-based composer David A. Jaffe.
The dancers this season include Rachel Garcia, Sonsheree Giles, Anna Greenberg Gold, Amy Lewis, Nol Simonse, Calvin L. Thomas, Jr. and Elizabeth Zepeda.
$30 - $60.
Presented by Nancy Karp + Dancers.
