Nancy Boy opened for business online in 2001 and the one and only retail shop has been in its current location since 2005, after relocating from upper Market Street. Nestled on a street without a chain store in sight, it offers a line of simply packaged, high quality products that place the emphasis on great ingredients rather than fancy containers or design. The shop achieves a comfortable home-like environment thanks to décor that includes updated, refinished and reupholstered vintage furniture and collections of mostly German and American ceramics, for sale.
Nancy Boy brags that it has as many women customers as men. The bar soaps remain one of the most popular original items. They come in a wide range of scents and are olive oil based, with essential oils for all natural aromas that linger only as long as you bathe or shower. The Signature bar is scented with French lavender, Tunisian rosemary and peppermint. Other bars to choose from include “Replenishing” which combines refreshing cucumber and lemon or “Invigorating", which is a bracing pairing of peppermint and spearmint. Bars are also available in Sweetgrass, Spa and Tea Rose. The mammoth 7-ounce bars are $7 each or 3 for $18. Like many other items in the shop, they are perfect for gift giving.
Having spent years working with Clorox, one of the founders decided to create a better laundry product. Gentler and environmentally friendly, Eco Laundry Soap ($20) is detergent-free, dye-free, phosphate-free, biodegradable, and comes in lavender geranium, and lemon verbena scents in addition to the original lavender scent. Best of all, when you use it, your clothes will not require fabric softener because of how cleanly the product rinses. A 5-pound bucket provides enough cleaning power for 30 large wash loads or 60 loads in a traditional front-loading machine.
Nancy Boy protects the planet with environmentally friendly products and recyclable containers, and protects your wallet as well. A favorite with female customers, their Ultramarine Night Cream 2 ounces, $50, contains the same active ingredients in competing products that cost up to 4 times more per ounce. Clinically proven to reduce the appearance of fine lines, it can also be used as an eye cream. Expect to see results in 28 days, and up to a 45% decrease of wrinkle density and length.
Balancing Facial Toner, 8 ounces ($22) uses neroli (orange blossom) for its natural antiseptic and antibacterial properties, and helps treat sub-dermal broken capillaries. It also includes witch hazel, sea kelp, aloe and ginkgo biloba.
Another best-selling item is the Signature Shave Cream, 6 ounces ($18), which includes avocado oil, glycerin and allantoin (comfrey), described as nature’s own miracle cure for shaving problems. It is specially formulated for sensitive, easily irritated skin, and for those prone to breakouts. Not surprisingly, this may be the top product for men who swear by its ability to prevent the dreaded razor bumps.
