Moving Day San Francisco

SEE EVENT DETAILS
The Parkinson's Foundation will host Moving Day San Francisco on Saturday, May 6, at Crissy Field. More than 400 community members are expected to take part in the in-person, family-friendly event, which is one of 45 Moving Day events taking place across the country in 2023. Funds raised through Moving Day support cutting-edge research, improved quality of care and education programs to improve the lives of people with Parkinson's disease (PD) and their families.

Moving Day is a celebration of movement, which is proven to help manage PD symptoms. It is estimated that one million people in the U.S. are living with PD, with approximately 90,000 people newly diagnosed each year. At Moving Day San Francisco, eventgoers will discover demonstrations of boxing and other movement disciplines to warm up for the walk. This year, the Parkinson's Foundation California Chapter will be honoring 23andMe CEO Anne Wojcicki at the event. 23andMe has been a top team since 2016, raising over $217,000 for the event's important mission.

When asked why she is supporting the Foundation and Moving Day San Francisco, Wojcicki said, "Parkinson's is the first condition we studied at 23andMe - we have been searching for insights into this disease and researching risk factors for over a decade. We've participated in Moving Day for several years now, and we're proud to continue to support this important event. It's truly inspiring to be a part of this purposeful community that shares our goals and impacts lives at scale."

"Moving Day is not only a critical funding effort for our mission, but it is also an important way of bringing the Parkinson's community together" said Gena Lennon, development director for the Parkinson's Foundation California Chapter. "Anne and the 23andMe are some of the most dedicated, talented and passionate people that we have had the pleasure of working with, and it's easy to see their passion for improving the lives of everyone in the Parkinson's community." she continued.

Since 2011, Moving Day events across the U.S. have raised nearly $40 million in support of the Foundation's mission of making life better for people with PD. Moving Day is made possible, in part, through the generous support of national and local partners including Amneal, Abbott, Kyowa Kirin, The Trousdale, Medtronic, Acadia, Acorda, Boston Scientific, Sutter Health and Kaiser Permanente.

About Parkinson's Disease
Affecting an estimated one million Americans and 10 million worldwide, Parkinson's disease is the second-most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer's and is the 14th-leading cause of death in the U.S. It is associated with a progressive loss of motor control (e.g., shaking or tremor at rest and lack of facial expression), as well as non-motor symptoms (e.g., depression and anxiety). There is no cure for Parkinson's and 90,000 new cases are diagnosed each year in the U.S. alone.
