ERGS- From Social to Critical for the Success of the Company

Employee Resource Groups continue to evolve as a means to meet the needs of both diverse employees and companies.  The next stage of their evolution should be to help employees not only find their way and their voice within large companies but also to help these individuals develop purpose-driven careers.  This enhanced mission of ERGs will help them and their companies connect to millennials and others who are increasingly looking to use their work lives to make a positive impact on society in addition to building a financially and intellectually rewarding career.

This enhanced mission meshes with many of the stated goals for ERGs, including recruiting, retaining and developing diverse talent and helping companies connect to the customer communities they serve.  Indeed, participating in many of the existing activities of ERGs can help employees find a social purpose in their work lives.  Helping to recruit, retain, and develop other diverse employees fosters social inclusion.  Paying it forward to other employees through formal and informal mentoring can provide immense psychic rewards.

But today’s diverse employees, and particularly millennials, may want more.  ERGs can respond by providing a forum for employees to discuss how their careers can serve the company’s and their own bottom line while also having a social impact.  ERGs can ultimately become both think tank and incubator for a company’s corporate social responsibility initiatives.  Having CSR ideas come from ERGS and not top down can ensure that these initiatives authentically resonate with employees and diverse communities and not just with senior management.  This can yield enormous reputational benefits for companies – both with diverse customer groups and with employees and prospective employees.

In short, virtuous cycles start when ERGs focus on helping their employees find purpose in their careers.
