Rare 35mm screening for Talking Pictures’ 20th anniversary!

Presented by David Templeton & special guests

Thursday, April 18, 7:00

Bay Area journalist David Templeton will present and discuss a rare 35mm presentation of the 1993 film Matinee, marking the 20th anniversary of Templeton’s “Talking Pictures” column (published for several years in the Pacific Sun). Matinee is director Joe Dante’s hilarious and nostalgic ode to the movies and the showmen of his youth, as a colorful movie producer (John Goodman) in 1962 takes his latest gimmick-laden B-horror epic to the monster-crazy youth of a Florida coastal town, just at the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis. This movie-lover’s movie is one of the most underrated of the 90s, also featuring Cathy Moriarty, Dick Miller, Jesse White, John Sayles. (US 1993) 99 min.

Released in 1993, Matinee also inspired David Templeton’s first “Talking Pictures” column. In each installment, he accompanies an interesting personality to the movies and shares their freewheeling post-film conversation. Templeton’s 20-year roster of fellow film fans includes such notables as Joan Baez, Tommy Smothers, Mort Sahl, Alan Dershowitz, Heidi Fleiss, Jane Hirshfeld, Michael Chabon, Bret Easton Ellis, Ram Dass and almost 900 others! Templeton has invited some surprise guests to participate in tonight’s show.
