Reflecting on the Margaret Jenkins Dance Company at 40 years, Jenkins chose to explore her Jewish heritage and travel to Israel to create a new dance work in collaboration with the Kolben Dance Company of Jerusalem. Moderated by Daniel Schifrin, Margaret Jenkins and Amir Kolben will discuss the sources and inspirations of their cross-cultural exchange. The dancers from the two companies will also perform excerpts of the work and answer questions from the audience.
Margaret Jenkins is a choreographer and mentor to many young artists as well as a designer of unique community-based dance projects. In 1970, Jenkins opened one of the West Coast’s first studio-performing spaces and a school for the training of professional modern dancers. In 1973, she founded the Margaret Jenkins Dance Company (MJDC), which has been a cornerstone of the cultural fabric of San Francisco. Jenkins has worked with dance, music, and visual arts luminaries, including Terry Allen, Alvin Curran, Paul Dresher, Rinde Eckert, David Lang, Bruce Nauman, Alexander V. Nichols, and Yoko Ono, among others. Over the last decade, Ms. Jenkins’ choreographic attention has been focused on cross-cultural collaborations between her company and international artists, including the Tanusree Shankar Dance Company of India, and the Guangzhou Modern Dance Company of China.
Amir Kolben is the Founder and Artistic Director of the Jerusalem-based Kolben Dance Company. Kolben performed as a principal dancer with Bat Sheva Company, as a soloist with the Israeli Ballet and the Opera Ballet in Freiburg, Germany, as well as in the U.S. At the beginning of his career as a choreographer, Kolben was among the founders of Tamar Dance Company in Ramla. Tamar was a contemporary, groundbreaking company, which was later re-established in Jerusalem, where Kolben was appointed its Artistic Director.
