M.I.A. Documentary Screening for LGBTQIA+ Asylum

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Join us for a screening of the documentary, “MATANGI / MAYA / M.I.A.” at The New Parkway Theatre!

Critically acclaimed pop star, visual artist, filmmaker. Daughter of the founder of Sri Lanka’s Tamil resistance, activist, refugee. Rather than abandon the elements of her identity that don’t fit the typical image or expectations of a pop star, M.I.A. has continually chosen to honor her background and all who have shared in the experience of suffering at the hands of inequality and oppression by using her career to amplify her voice as an advocate for refugees and human rights.

Often misrepresented and misunderstood by the media, Mathangi Arulpragasam finally tells her own story. Utilizing 22 years of footage and blending music, history, art, and politics, “MATANGI / MAYA / M.I.A.” offers the opportunity to witness her unique evolution.

All proceeds go to Oasis Legal Services. Watch a movie and support LGBTQIA+ asylum at the same time.

****************************************************************************************

Oasis Legal Services proudly provides quality legal immigration services to under-represented low-income groups with a focus on LGBTQIA+ communities. With 40 years of collective experience representing over 800 LGBTQIA+ asylum seekers, Oasis maintains a 99% success rate despite the significant decline in asylum approvals and an increasingly hostile climate. Asylum keeps our clients safe from the threat of deportation to countries where their very lives are at risk and allows them to pursue educational opportunities, legally work, and access needed health and social services.

We charge minimal sliding-scale fees based on a client’s ability to pay and offer our services pro bono to those unable to pay. 100% of the price of your ticket and/or donation will support making affordable legal assistance accessible to all Bay Area asylum-eligible immigrants.
