Literacyworks Lecture Series: Brian Fishman

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Brian Fishman will kick off the 2017 series on Sunday June 11, 2017 from 3:45 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Carole L. Ellis Auditorium at the Santa Rosa Junior College Petaluma campus (ticket information below).

The lecture series is a fundraiser for the Literacyworks Center, a project of Literacyworks in collaboration with the Santa Rosa Junior College Petaluma Campus. The Center helps low-income, low-literacy adults enroll and succeed in these educational programs by providing scholarships, mentoring, support and a pathway to college at the Santa Rosa Junior College.

Brian Fishman is one of the world’s leading experts on the origins of ISIS. He is a counterterrorism research fellow at New America and a Fellow with the Combating Terrorism Center (CTC) at West Point. He previously served as the CTC’s Director of Research and was a professor in the Department of Social Sciences at West Point. Fishman is the author of a number of studies on terrorism and al-Qaeda, including seminal investigations of al-Qaeda's foreign fighters in Iraq and Iranian support for Shia militias fighting U.S. troops in Iraq. Fault Lines in Global Jihad: Organizational, Strategic, and Ideological Fissures, a volume he co-edited with Assaf Moghadam, was named one of the top books for understanding terrorist recruitment in Perspectives on Terrorism. He is also the author of the pivotal book The Master Plan: ISIS, al-Qaeda, and the Jihadi Strategy for Final Victory.

Fishman is a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations and was a founding editor of the CTC Sentinel. He has taught as an adjunct professor in Georgetown's School of Foreign Service and Columbia's School of International and Public Affairs. Before joining the CTC, Fishman was the Foreign Affairs/Defense Legislative Assistant for Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey. Fishman is a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles and Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. He grew up in Penngrove, CA and graduated from Petaluma High School.

Executive Director, Paul Heavenridge says: “It is a goal of the Literacyworks Lectures series to promote thoughtful consideration and civil discourse on the importance of literacy and lifelong education in all its various forms. Our focus is on how literacy and lifelong education transform lives. The more literate a person becomes the better they’re able to self-advocate. We ask our featured speakers to speak on their selected topic of choice and incorporate the importance of education in life’s challenges. We hope that engaging our community through distinguished speaker events, we will provoke, further, and improve actions taken in our society to support and participate in lifelong learning. I’m very excited about launching our 2017 Speaker Series with Brian Fishman.”

The first Literacyworks Lecture took place in October 2016, with actor, author and speaker Peter Coyote. It was such a success, both as a fundraiser and a community learning experience, that Literacyworks decided to expand in 2017 with a series of three lectures. The series second speaker will be Michael Krasny on August 20, 2017.
