Launching a Magazine: Now & Then

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Join us for the next installment of our new event series, hosted by the Heath Newsstand. Smart, interesting people, talking about their passions. A reason to come together, to share, and learn.
This time, hear from three editors who launched ReadyMade, AUGUST, and AFAR about their experiences getting a new publication off the ground, what they've learned from the journey, and how it has shaped their careers. Though all three magazines were founded on a sense of discovery and rule-breaking, the launches span nearly two decades and offer insight into how the world of print has evolved in that time.
Your ticket includes admission to the talk, along with bread and dips from Tartine, and beer from Fort Point.

Featuring:
Shoshana Berger founded ReadyMade magazine in 2001 as a new kind of DIY magazine, for an audience whose interest in shaping their lives extended beyond handicrafts. The magazine folded in 2011, but over its decade-long tenure, it offered readers a guide for how to run for office, convert trash bins into seating, make custom clothing and so much more.
Dung Ngo founded AUGUST Journal in 2017 as a new kind of travel magazine. Each of its issues focuses on one location, immersing the reader in that city's rich art, architecture, and design scene, and sharing encounters with locals, their habits, and their pleasures—in other words, the sights and souls that form the fabric of each city’s unique culture.
Julia Cosgrove was part of the launch team for AFAR magazine in 2009 and now serves as its Editor-in-Chief. AFAR encourages travel that is founded on deeper connections and more fulfilling experiences; they also run a nonprofit that helps fund trips abroad for underserved high-school students. Julia also spent three years at ReadyMade as Deputy Editor.
