In the late 1970’s, Doug Jayne was managing the Music Plus store in Azusa, CA, and he hired Hoyt Wilhelm as Christmas help. Doug eventually relocated to Santa Rosa, and Hoyt moved to Santa Cruz where they remained friends. On a visit to the Cruz, Doug was impressed my how many good record stores there were in one small town.
(Before The Last Record Store) Santa Rosa had NO good record stores.
Tired of driving to Backdoor Records in Cotati, Doug agreed to buy Prez Records in Railroad Square (Santa Rosa). The owner reneged, and Doug found a space at 739 4th Street. In 1982, Doug convinced Hoyt to put his teaching career on hold, move to Santa Rosa and open The Last Record Store. We stayed on Fourth Street for 20 years and relocated to our current location on Mendocino Avenue in 2003...
We love music today as much as ever.
