One of the first Chinese restaurants to cater to Westerners is still in its original location. For almost 50 years, Kan's has been located upstairs at 708 Grant Ave. This is still a great place to take your folks or those out-of-towners who have never heard of Kung Pao. It's so Herb Caen! Check out the black and white glossies of the past visiting celebs in the bar area, including Elvis, Lucy and Cary Grant, in the kitchen. The food is very good, the atmosphere is dressy and traditionally elegant, and the prices are reasonable. Cashew chicken is a safe bet for any first timers. Entrees start at $9 and go to $15.
