Red Diaper Baby - Sunday, 7/23: A coming-of-age story about a boy being raised by Jewish Communists in New York City. Josh has been told by his parents that he will grow up to lead a Communist revolution in the United States. This plan starts to break down in kindergarten, and only gets worse in high school. Complicating matters are Josh's less-than-heroic first attempts to lose his virginity. Will he find success first with Communism or sex? And what does "The Internationale" have to do with it?
Ben Franklin: Unplugged - Sunday, July 30: One day, looking at himself in the mirror while shaving, Josh came to a shocking realization: he looked like Ben Franklin! This discovery set him on a journey to learn enough about the "First American". A historical mystery as well as a raucous family comedy, Ben Franklin: Unplugged takes Josh from Berkeley to New York, and finally to the Benjamin Franklin Papers at Yale University, where the archives reveal some shattering truths.
Sea of Reeds: The Second Parting (A Work-In-Progress Improv) - Sunday, August 6th: What do Judaism and oboe-playing have in common? Reeds! The Israelites needed a miracle to make their way across the Sea of Reeds, and it will take a miracle for Josh to make even one playable reed so he can play an important Bach piece on his oboe.
The Bottomless Bowl (A Work-In-Progress Improv) - Sunday, August 13: Josh was Artist-in-Residence at the Zen Hospice Project, and then volunteered at the hospice for several years. This improvised work-in-progress will include stories from his experiences there, as he grappled with the long-ago passing of his father and learned invaluable lessons about life and death from the hospice's residents, volunteers, and staff members. The Bottomless Bowl is about Josh's attempts to come to terms with his own finite existence while also somehow connecting with the infinite. It's also about making sure the residents got exactly what they wanted to eat!
$25 in advance; $30 at the door.
Presented by Shotgun Players.
