Please join The City Club of San Francisco and Host David Jamison in welcoming San Francisco Sheriff Vicki Hennessy to the Roundtable. Vicki is a respected public safety leader, a mother, and a trailblazer.
Born and raised in San Francisco, she joined the Sheriff’s Department in 1975 a member of the first recruit class that included women, communities of color and LGBT deputies. She rose quickly through the ranks, becoming the youngest Captain in California law enforcement in 1983. In 1997, she was promoted to Chief Deputy. She was a member of the Sheriff’s Department’s executive management team for 25 years, serving in every division of the department.
In 2008, she was appointed Director of the Department of Emergency Management, where she directed citywide emergency planning as well as 911 dispatch for police, fire and medical emergency until 2011 when she retired. In 2012, she was appointed by Mayor Ed Lee to serve as interim Sheriff for seven months. In a landslide victory, Hennessy won election by earning 61% of the vote.
Vicki Hennessy is the mother of two adult children and has been married for 39 years to her husband, Jim Hennessy, a retired San Francisco Police Department officer.
