Intro to Photogrammetry

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Interested in using Photogrammetry to make your own 3D models? Or perhaps you want to learn the fundamentals of this amazing technology. We’re looking for VR and AR developers and designers, drone pilots, photographers, and anyone else eager to learn how to create VR-ready 3D models with photogrammetry.
In one day, you will learn about the top tools and techniques used for photogrammetry, how to plan and execute a photogrammetry project, how to create a point cloud in a 3D mesh from photos, and finally, how to use these products as Unity assets.
This workshop is taught by photogrammetry professor, wizard, and enthusiast, Justin Underhill.

Why this workshop?
This workshop will jumpstart your understanding and ability to use photogrammetry. Whether you aspire to learn how to make your own 3D models for personal or professional projects, you will leave with an understanding of the industry and the ability to bring in custom assets using photogrammetry.
This one-day intensive crash course is designed for beginners to photogrammetry. There is no coding experience required. We can think of nothing more fulfilling than building your own passion project with your own custom assets. Free yourself from the burden of asset store models and model artists; seize the opportunity to make your own!

What is Photogrammetry?
Photogrammetry is the process of making measurements and models from photographs. After taking a series of photos of an object, one can render maps, drawings, measurements, and 3D models of the real-world object.
This is a powerful tool used by many VR and AR developers and designers who want to use their own custom assets.

What’s Included:
1 day of intensive skill training, building and networking
HP Computers for project testing
2 week pass to Upload SF or Upload LA

The Weekend Schedule:
Saturday, March 17 (10:00am - 6:00pm)
10:00am: Arrive for coffee.
10:30am: Industry overview, history, and key terms
11:00am: Top tools/ techniques, planning a photogrammetry project, and basics of digital photography
12:30pm: Lunch
1:30pm: Breakout Groups: capturing images
2:00pm: Building point clouds
5:00pm: Bringing your new objects into your Unity project

About Justin:

Justin Underhill is a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in the Digital Humanities at UC Berkeley. He earned his PhD in Art History from Berkeley, completing a dissertation, "World Art and the Illumination of Virtual Space," that uses advanced software to reconstruct the architectural contexts in which works of art were displayed. Such research explores the relation between pictures and the lighting of the space in which they were originally viewed. Underhill continued this work in his prior appointment as a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in the Digital Humanities at the University of Southern California. Presently, among other projects, he is developing art.rip, a site dedicated to digital capture, forensic visualization, and the history of art.
