Intergeneration Cultural Trauma and the Racial Complex, Fall Symposium

SEE EVENT DETAILS
at Nile Hall (see times)
The Psychotherapy Institute is honored to host Fanny Brewster, PhD, MFA as our featured speaker for our Fall Symposium "Intergeneration Cultural Trauma and the Racial Complex." Examining how Jungian psychology initially failed to engage African Americans, and continuing this exploration through the modern use of the Shadow in language and imagery, Brewster creates space for a multidimensional exploration of race and racism in America. Her work expands our understanding of the impact of racism in American psychology, beginning a dialogue and proposing changes to update Jungian psychology to recognize an American multicultural psyche and a positive African American culture.

Brewster will discuss the aspects and effects of intergenerational trauma caused from slavery and the racial complexes that we all hold today. Lecture topics include "Mothering Slaves, the Intergenerational Orphan and Cultural Trauma" and "The Racial Complex: Dissociation and the Search for Unification with the Self," applying C.G. Jung's Complex Theory and how it can deepen our understanding of collective cultural complexes.

Sam Kimbles, PhD will respond to Brewster's papers and further elaborate some of its key concepts and themes.

Continuing Education units are available.

Fanny Brewster PhD, MFA, is a Jungian analyst and Poetry/Nonfiction writer practicing in New York City. Brewster is a Faculty member at Pacifica Graduate Institute, the C.G. Jung Foundation for Analytical Psychology and the Philadelphia Jung Institute (PAJA).
