On Wednesday, August 6th at 11am the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History will be hosting a lecture by our guest curator in conjunction with the exhibit Indigenous Artists of Northern California: Art, History, and Traditions. The talk, free with admission, focuses on northwestern California covering the Hupa, Tolowa, Yurok and Karuk tribes.
Through the rich display of handcrafted baskets, tools, other artifacts, and in audio and video presentations, this exhibit encourages the understanding of and respect for the tribes, the artists, and their traditional creations. It shows work created by living artists as a modern recognition of their important cultural traditions and craft. The exhibit presents a diverse collection of handcrafted objects and artifacts and includes learning opportunities for visitors of all ages. In addition, hands-on elements, photos, books, maps, audio and video are included in the exhibit to stimulate thought and encourage deeper investigation and study. Visitors will learn about techniques and traditions used to develop baskets and objects using native materials.
Learn more about the exhibit from the curator, ask questions, and enjoy light snacks and refreshments at the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History at 1305 East Cliff Drive in Santa Cruz. More information is available at (831) 420-6115 or
