An entrepreneur and software engineer who specializes in building respectful social apps for the web, Ben is the Director of Investments in San Francisco for Matter, an accelerator focused on media entrepreneurship. Ben co-founded the community platform Known, which was part of Matter’s third accelerator program. Prior to that, he was a co-founder of Elgg, an open source social networking engine whose users included Harvard and Stanford Universities, NASA, and The World Bank. He was also the first employee at Latakoo, an enterprise video transfer solution used by media organizations including NBC News. Before joining Matter, he worked on the technical team at Medium.
- Sunil Pual -Â Co-Founder and CEO of SidecarÂ
Sunil created Brightmail, the first commercial anti-spam companies in the late 1990s, which captured 80% of the market. In December of last year he published a strategy to defeat fake news inspired by the success of controlling email spam(medium.com/@sunilpaul). Sunil also started Sidecar, the inventor of ridesharing, and is active in civic empowerment, economic development, and climate change solutions.
- Aviv Ovadya -Â Founder at Media Window
Aviv Ovadya is the founder of MediaWindow, an early-stage non-profit providing credibility ratings for online news in order to map the impact of publishers and platforms on the media ecosystem and help platforms put an end to misinformation incentives. An MIT undergrad and graduate student whose research developed algorithms for self-folding robots, Aviv has also consulted on software engineering and product design for both early-stage startups and tech behemoths. His current focus is ensuring that we have the necessary data to understand and improve our rapidly deteriorating media ecosystem.Â
- EJ Harkness (Moderator) -Â Senior Project Analyst at FABERNOVELÂ
EJ Harkness is a researcher and analyst at FABERNOVEL, where she works on innovation projects with clients in media and other industries to help them understand the new technologies and business models that are impacting their business. She holds a Master’s degree from UCLA, where her research focused on the intersection of literary culture and information technology in the English Renaissance. A startup veteran trained in User Experience Design by the world-renowned Nielsen Norman Group, she continues to work with a wide range of entrepreneurs and startups to expand their networks, refine their storytelling, and improve UX in their products.
