We’ll explore the recent monetary history of Zimbabwe and Venezuela and learn how and why the national currencies in these countries collapsed. You may have seen a 100 trillion dollar Zimbabwean note, or heard that a cup of coffee costs more than three million bolivares in Venezuela. But why? And what was life like for average citizens along the way? And, finally, how are people buying, selling, and investing now in these countries?
We’ll also hear from Jonathan Wheeler -- who recently left Goldman Sachs to start a foundation aiming to airdrop bitcoin into Venezuela and other economies experiencing high inflation -- as well as Jill Carlson, who is working with the Zcash Company to bring privacy preserving and decentralized technologies to those who need them most.
Why is there so much bitcoin activity happening in Venezuela today? How does it act as an escape valve from hyperinflation? And what are the challenges that it faces for increased adoption? Evan Mawarire is a civil rights activist, pastor, and leader of the #ThisFlag movement in Zimbabwe. In 2016, the campaign resulted in a mass movement of millions of Zimbabweans shutting down the capital in a series of protests against corruption, poverty, and abuse of office by the Mugabe regime. Mawarire was charged with inciting public violence and "attempting to overthrow the government." The court later threw out the charges and released him. In the face of massive public protests, Mugabe resigned at the end of 2017.Mariana Bernandez is the Creative Director at the Human Rights Foundation. She previously worked for the opposition-led local government of the municipality of Sucre (in Caracas, Venezuela), first in strategic planning, later in community outreach, and then in designing and implementing policies to reduce crime in Petare, a low-income neighborhood of 1 million inhabitants where the homicide rates are among the highest in the world.Jonathan Wheeler is Co-founder and CEO of Pale Blue Foundation, a non-profit whose mission is to unite our world by empowering individual sovereignty. Pale Blue’s first initiative is to raise and electronically airdrop huge amounts of Bitcoin onto economies experiencing high inflation.
Jill Carlson is working with the Zcash Company on adoption strategies in emerging markets experiencing hyperinflation. Their mission is to bring privacy preserving and decentralized technologies to those who need them most. She has also done work with institutions like the IMF on strategic work related to cryptocurrencies.
