Human-Centered Community Engagement Training

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Join us for a hands-on training in which you will apply human-centered design to your Community Engagement strategy.
Every organization needs to connect with key audiences and stakeholders to be effective. The practice of community engagement is well established, but what does it look like to apply an iterative, human-centered approach to your outreach efforts? Through this one day, hands-on training you will learn to "up your engagement game" through the applied practice of Public Impact Design - an innovative method designed specifically for the unique context of the public sector that integrates human-centered design, reflective practice, and systems thinking.
This approach can be applied to your engagement strategy, outreach collateral, project messaging, workshops, online engagement, and more. We’ll cover all levels of community engagement programs, including efforts to inform, consult, involve, collaborate, and empower.
We’ve found that integrating Public Impact Design into public participation:

Builds ownership and trust by meaningfully engaging participants early in the process

Minimizes assumptions through an understanding of local context, thereby producing more sustainable and equitable outcomes

Fosters creativity and continual improvement

You will be introduced to the following tools and techniques and will have the opportunity to apply several of these to your real world engagement challenge:

Creating an engagement strategy

Stakeholder analysis

Engagement tools & techniques assessment

Human-centered design process

"User" interviews, testing & research

Ideation & co-design

Digital engagement platforms

Prototyping

Who is this training for? Anyone who works closely with the public, including:

Government Agency Staff
Nonprofits and Foundation Staff
Social Entrepreneurs
Civic Technologists

Can I bring a colleague? Yes! It's even more fun that way.
Is the Intro to Public Impact Design a required prerequisite? No, anyone is welcome to attend this training, which will also include foundational concepts from our Intro to Public Impact Deisign training. However, if you have already completed our Public Impact Design training, you are also encouraged to sign up for the Community Engagement training, which will cover many new concepts.
Here’s what people are saying:
“It was so awesome to be able to have the tools to listen to a problem and systematically develop solutions. Also, I am a hands-on learner, so the project-based learning was very helpful.” - Content Strategist, Office of Innovation
“It was a fun, creative way to apply a new thought process to our daily work!” - Director of Constituent Affairs, Office of Civic Engagement
