The Hula School is owned and operated by kumu (teacher) Leolani Lowry, a native of Hilo, Hawaii, who has been dancing hula since she was four years old. Leolani has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Dance Ethology from the University of Hawaii, and has danced and competed professionally throughout the world. The Hula School Hawaiian halau name is Ka Lei Wehi O Ka Mailelauloa, honoring Leolani's past kumu hula and the big leaf maile, a symbol of the island of Hawaii.

Sharing the Hawaiian culture with the local community, the Hula School of Santa Cruz supports charities and sponsors Hawaiian cultural events such as lei making workshops, ukulele instruction, and Hawaiian music concerts. The Hula School also performs at private functions for local businesses and organizations.
