Having the ability to flow in relationship to others is an essential quality to cultivate. Whether it’s on the home front, in the workplace, or in the “third space,” working well with others is a necessary skill that can be acquired like all others—starting from within. As children we are socialized to “play well,” but some of us need a refresher course. The skills of cooperation and collaboration require life-long learning and practice.
Through meditation, culture-mapping, and artmaking this workshop provides an opportunity to witness your patterns and processes which determine your personal ability to navigate the often awkward landscape of unconscious bias. Designing and maintaining positivity can be difficult when fear, ego, and social norms collide while interacting with others. In this workshop, explore compassion as a tool for liberation by unearthing your values, designing for kind communication, and picking your battles.
Ashara Ekundayo is a cultural strategist, activist, and curator who facilitates the creation of collaboratory spaces where methodology amplifying the intersections of social permaculture, social entrepreneurship, and social justice can be manifested. Through her company AE Creative she consults with organizations to assess and build capacity for increased community engagement through the use of mindfulness, creative arts practice, exhibition, and project management through the lens of Black and Diasporic identity culture(s).
Selected by the Ashoka Foundation as a social innovator “stimulating the green economy," Ashara works as a sustainability mentor by designing curriculum and programing to support transformative healing in communities around the world. She was hired by the U.S. Dept of State to help implement their first Professional Fellowship in Food Security in East Africa, and is the co-founder of the first indoor, aquaponic farm in Denver, CO, The GrowHaus. She combines her passions for food, art, and tech to increase the dialogue on regenerative design and has shared her vision at venues such the World Social Forum, SOCAP, and SXSW.
Currently, Ashara serves as Co-Founder and Chief Creative Officer of Impact Hub Oakland an innovation incubator and co-working space for social entrepreneurs engaged in building a just society through business development. She is also the Director of Omi Gallery, a social practice art space with locations in Oakland and San Francisco where she listens for place-based solutions revealed through intimate art gatherings with unlikely allies.
She holds Advisory Board positions with KQED Arts, Black Girls Code, the Oakland Public Conservatory of Music and Our City.is, and has served as a Fellow with Green For All, Emerging Arts Professionals, Institute For The Future, and Schools Without Borders.
