How to be Married: Jo Piazza in Conversation with Nicolle Zapien

SEE EVENT DETAILS
We've all heard it: marriage is hard. Author and journalist Jo Piazza heard this statement repeatedly before her wedding, and her thinking about this statement lead to her new book—How to Be Married: What I Learned from Real Women on Five Continents About Surviving My First (Really Hard) Year of Marriage. In her own experience planning her wedding, she realized that American marriage traditions focus more on what to wear, who to invite, and what to feed them than on creating a real, lasting, joy-filled commitment between two people. What comes after the whirlwind romance and fairy-tale wedding?
In How to Be Married, readers follow Jo and her husband Nick through their first year of marriage as they explore the world uncovering the rituals, customs, and traditions of other cultures, unlocking important nuggets of wisdom along the way. This conversation event is an opportunity to hear firsthand from Jo about the lessons she learned on her journey through an adventurous first year of marriage that included hiking Kilimanjaro, getting sex tips from an Orthodox Jewish scholar, Ayahuasca rituals in Peru, and so much more.
Jo Piazza is an award-winning journalist and the bestselling coauthor of the novel? The Knockoff.? Her work has appeared in the?Wall Street Journal, New York Times, New York?magazine,?Glamour, Elle, Time, Marie Claire,?the?Daily Beast, and?Slate. She is also the author of the critically acclaimed?Celebrity, Inc.: How Famous People Make Money; and?If Nuns Ruled the World: Ten Sisters on a Mission. She holds an undergraduate degree in economics from the University of Pennsylvania, a master's in journalism from Columbia University, and a master's in religious studies from New York University. She lives in San Francisco with her husband Nick and their giant dog.
Dr. Nicolle Zapien is an assistant professor in the human sexuality doctoral program at CIIS. She is also an AASECT certified sex therapist and a licensed MFT in private practice in San Francisco who works from an existential-humansitic perspective with adults and couples.  Dr. Zapien recently developed and launched the sex therapy and sex educator certificate training programs at CIIS.  Her research interests are varied but primarily focus on infidelity, sexual consent, and how these are impacted by decision-making and judgment.  She is currently writing a book for clinicians on phenomenological understandings of infidelity and new treatment directions.  She lives in Berkeley with her husband and children.
