How A CCA Sabbatical Changed My Life @ CCA

SEE EVENT DETAILS
CCA Design Division presents How a CCA Sabbatical Changed My LifeThursday, November 29, 2018California College of the Arts 1111 Eighth St. in SF - 7pm
Ian Coats MacColl used a sabbatical from CCA in 2015 to move his family to Amsterdam, The Netherlands for one year. The experience not only provided him an altered view of design today, it changed the way he thinks about teaching, professional practice, and the organization of our society.Donald Fortescue spent the austral summer of 2016/17 in Antarctica as a US National Science Foundation Antarctic Artists and Writers Fellow. At the South Pole, he worked in collaboration with the IceCubeNeutrino Observatory - a giant array of photon detectors buried miles under the polar ice. Donald approaches artmaking and astrophysics as two congruent practices of ‘fieldwork’ - both requiring the overcoming of logistical challenges, the deployment of sensitive and largely untested instruments, improvisation and adjustment to accommodate field, and comprehending and interpreting the resulting data. Donald will talk about his time in Antarctica, outline the development of the various sculptural instruments he deployed at the Pole, and share some of the imagery, video and sound works that he has developed for exhibition.
