Hong Kong Cinema

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Presented in association with the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, San Francisco, this annual series of exciting new work from one of the world’s most important filmmaking hubs and displays the region’s proficiency in developing entertaining films in a range of genres and storytelling styles.

“Alongside scabrous comedies about breast milk and dark dives into police corruption and inequities of power, this year’s program finds Hong Kong tackling charged issues in rich and progressive ways,” said SFFILM Senior Programmer Rod Armstrong. “From the transgender character at the heart of Tracey to the sexual awakening of The Lady Improper’s protagonist, the 2019 selection demonstrates the region’s risk-taking and forward-thinking fare.”

“It is encouraging to see SFFILM continue to support Hong Kong movies,” said Ivanhoe Chang, Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, San Francisco. “Year after year, they include works by well-known as well as emerging directors. This year, we will welcome the attendance of two new directors, Jun Li and Lee Cheuk-pan. Tracey, the directorial debut of Jun Li, and G Affairs by Lee Cheuk-pan received nine and six nominations respectively at the 38th Hong Kong Film Awards. We look forward to hearing them share their first feature film experience.”

Sporting brand-new early summer dates, this year’s Hong Kong Cinema offers a selection that traverses many genres while also delivering the action-packed thrillers that put the region on the cinematic map. Hong Kong’s support of independent and emerging filmmakers is reflected in Jessey Tsang’s exploration of female sexuality The Lady Improper and the Hong Kong First Feature Film Initiative-supported G Affairs, while festival favorite Pang Ho-Cheung returns with his breast milk caper comedy Missbehavior.
