Los Altos, CA – On Sunday, December 8, 2013 from 2:00-4:00pm, the Los Altos History Museum will be celebrating the holiday season in a free family-friendly event tailored to kids – a “Holiday Family Fun Fest.â€
“This time of year, it’s all about being with family and friends,†says Pinky Whelan, the event’s coordinator. “We’re celebrating the winter holidays with story-telling, crafts, music and more—with a special focus on children.â€
Smith House tour docents will note the role children played in the past. “In the 1930s during the Great Depression, most kids didn’t get a lot of gifts,†Pinky adds. “This was way before TV and X-boxes. The radio was our entertainment—that and playing the piano and singing. Going to see a movie downtown was a big deal.†A children’s choir will kick off the event at 2:00 pm. Upstairs, guests can enjoy original Santa paintings from the collection of Los Altos artist Emily Hollinger. Refreshments will enhance the free event.
In the Main Museum, the Christmas tree is decorated with Beanie Babies from collector Gayle Carter (who works at the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce.) “A friend who was collecting them said they would be of value one day,†says Gayle. “I took one look at a funny looking pelican and an adorable hedgehog and I was in love with them! Crazy but fun.†Both collectors will be at the event to chat with guests.
Kids’ craft tables have been added in the main gallery to complement the current exhibit of local art, Los Altos – Moving Art Forward. “Kids and adults both have been fascinated with the Buddha boards – where you paint with water†says exhibit curator and board president Jane Reed. “When it dries, the art is gone. It’s very Zen.â€
